Electronic verification code or EVC is a 10 digit number which is essential for efiling of income tax return. It is important if you want to verify your income tax returns without sending the signed ITR-V to CPC. This number is unique for every tax payers and is linked to their PAN number and is valid for 72 hours only. Each EVC can be used only to validate one income tax return and it can be generated through various methods.
The EVC can be easily generated by using the official website of Income Tax Department. The website offer e-filing of income tax, but this facility is limited to the taxpayers who are not claiming any tax refund and have a total income of not more than 5 Lacs a year. Tax filing online requires the EVC to be generated as a proof of e-filing.
Other than e-filing system, the EVC can be generated using net banking method if you have an account with one of the registered banks. The registered banks offer direct access to the e-filing website for the account holders. While using net banking with those banks, the account holder will see a efiling of income tax return option in the dashboard. You need to click on that option, and it will redirect you to the e-filing website where you can generate the code. The generated code will be sent to the email ID or registered mobile number that is provided by the IT department. This code is essential to verify your income tax return.
Another way to generate EVC is through Adhaar Card Number by linking it to your PAN card. The linking can be done using the e-filing website to generate the EVC. Once adhaar card is linked, you will receive an OTP into your registered mobile number which you have provided with adhaar information. For, tax filing online, you will need this code to verify your return.
Also, the code can be generated through ATM if the associated bank account is linked to the PAN card. Along with that, the bank society also must be registered with the Income Tax Department. Access the ATM with your debit or credit card and the bank will request efiling of income tax return website to generate EVC. Once the code is generated, it will be sent to your mobile number associated with the bank.
The EVC is required to e-verify your income tax return without sending the ITR-V form.
